It was an all-Olathe affair on Saturday as the Olathe North High School cross country team competed against all five Olathe schools in the Battle of the Birds at Lexington Lake Park in De Soto, Kansas. Olathe North was able to turn in a number of strong performances en route to team and individual successes.
The story of the day was the boys varsity team who were the team champs and earned bragging rights in the inaugural Battle of the Birds. The Kosgei brothers, Bramwel (3rd) and Ray (5th) continued their promising 2020 season with times of 16:44 and 16:53 respectively, along with Josh Caldwell (7th) who rounded out the top-ten finishers for Olathe North. Tanner Coltvet (15th) also ran a solid race Saturday, finishing with a time of 17:45.
Despite being down two runners, the girls varsity team secured a second place team finish on Saturday, behind strong performances by Lexie Dockstader (3rd) with a time of 19:42, Shea Johnson (5th) with a time of 19:59, and Kira Almsberger (8th) with a time of 20:12. It was a gutsy performance that proves the girls team is looking to make a statement when it comes to postseason racing.
The girls junior varsity team also turned in a solid effort, with freshman Cora Katzenberger (3rd) securing another top-five finish in what has proven to be a promising start to her 2020 campaign, and Maddie Zimmerman (10th) rounding out the top-ten finishes.
Next up, Olathe North heads back to Shawnee Mission Park on Thursday October 8 to compete in the Mill Valley Cat Classic, where they look to continue building upon a season of success. The Cat Classic will serve as the final regular season stop before Sunflower League on October 17 and then regionals and the state meet.
